HANSONS-BROOKS AT THE BOSTON MARATHON: DAY SEVEN KYLE O’BREIN

Boston 2006 really put Hansons-Brooks on the map as far as U.S. distance running goes. You are one of the three Hanons-Brooks athletes who ran in 2006. Could you summarize the team's mood going into that race? How does that compare to this year's squad?
In 2006 we were all very focused on going into Boston to make a statement, that Americans can finish in the front of a major marathon. This year's crew appears more fit and ready to exceed the expectations achieved by the 2006 crew.
Do you have any expectations for the group?
As long as everybody races as well as they have been training, it should be a good day for the group.
Individually, have you approached training differently leading up to Boston this segment compared to 2006?
I've approached it different in that I'm running higher mileage now than I was then, and I'm also able to run workouts at a faster pace. Aside from that I'm focusing on training smarter as well as harder, being careful about recovery, etc...
You were a member of the 2007 World Championship team in Osaka, Japan. What lessons did you take away from that experience?
Just competing in a World Championships race was a great learning experience, lining up with some of the best in the world, all representing out countries. I definitely learned that you have to be flexible with your race plan (as temps were in the mid 90's for the marathon), and the importance of running smart (was around 90th place at the mile and finished 32nd).
Kyle, you have been with the Hanons program for a few years now. What originally brought you to Hansons-Brooks?
Just the desire to continue training after college and get the most out of myself.
Being one of the veterans of the Hansons team, what would you tell someone who is interested in running for Hansons?
Set up a visit and see if it is for you, if you're willing to put in several years of high mileage training, and a group of guys that you may like one day and hate the next, you could be the next Brian Sell!
A lot of runners talk about the difficulty of the Boston course, mainly Heartbreak Hill. What kind of plan do you have going into a difficult course like Boston?
Boston is definitely a course that you will run better on the more you run it, the idea is to be smart enough early in the race so you can be in attack mode from 21 in instead of just trying to survive after Heartbreak.
Many runners immediately associate Boston with Heartbreak Hill but what many of those runners don't realize is that Heartbreak is the last of a series of four hills. Could you describe that set of hills and how you approach mid-race barriers?
You just have to take each barrier as it comes, you get a lot of nice downhill for the first 16 miles or so, then you get the first major climb from about 16-18, a little respite from 18-19, then rolling to climbing again through about 21, the top of Heartbreak, take each one separately, and run them strong, but don't use too much.
What do you think are some of the keys to your marathon training and what are some of the mistakes many first-time marathoners will make?
Mileage is definitely the key to our training, first timers will make the mistake of being too impatient, you have to respect the distance.
What is the best advice you could give a beginning runner?
If you take your time getting started, and really learn to enjoy the sport, it is something that you will be able to participate in for a long time.
